Mathemagicalâ„¢ Daily Lessons
First, teachers need training on the neuroscience of math and effective math instruction. Next, they need resources and guidance on what to teach when, in order to actually implement what they learned.
The Solution: Structured Numeracy Lessons
In order to actually implement what they are learning, teachers need guidance on what to teach when. This guidance includes daily lessons indicating what to teach each day, using the methods of effective math instruction learned through PD and Decoding Math. Then they need the relevant resources, including the supporting materials needed for each lesson, such as cards, manipulatives, and graphic organizers.
What is Structured Numeracy?
Similar to Structured Literacy, Structured Numeracy is based on the Science of Math and emphasizes multisensory, explicit, and systematic teaching of all important components of numeracy. These components include foundational skills (subitizing, structuring numbers, decoding and encoding, etc.), higher-level numeracy skills (problem solving, application, etc.), and number sense abilities essential to numeracy development (perceptual and conceptual subitizing, composing and decomposing numbers, etc.).
We believe that this structured, intentional approach to developing numeracy is what has been missing in many math programs. In Structured Numeracy, students begin with conceptual understanding, develop strong number sense strategies, practice toward fluency, then apply these skills to problem-solving, multi-digit operations, fractions, and more. To ensure successful learning for all, it is essential that the methods used be based on and aligned with the neuroscience of math, and that our innate ability to subitize be developed as the foundation for number sense.
Mathemagical Structured Numeracy Curriculum: K-2
Currently we are developing Mathemagical Structured Numeracy Curriculum for K-2. This daily curriculum provides lessons and the accompanying resources for each day, helping teachers to sequence their instruction appropriately. Daily lessons guide teachers in using dot patterns, Cuisenaire rods, and more to help students develop the foundations for number sense.
